Welcome to Katie’s House

Katie’s House is a nonprofit 501(c) (3) organization that provides Independent Housing, Activities and Services to people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

Katie’s House is approved by the State of NJ as a Service Provider.

We are a Parent Driven Organization that believes People with Intellectual Disabilities should have the same rights as everyone else, to live with others who are compatible in age and abilities, to be out in the community and have activities that are educational and fun.

Parents today are not happy with the common practice of warehousing individuals with disabilities in workshops and group homes. We do not want to settle for our adult children to be grouped with others who are not age or ability appropriate.

The Service Group

Assisting Families and Children:

  • Collect New Toys for Pediatric Oncology Patients battling cancer and its side effects.
  • Collect New and Gently Used Clothes for needy families.
  • Collect Toiletries and Food for needy families.

This program supports community involvement, allowing opportunities for our participants to reach out to children battling cancer, assist needy families locally and help other non - profits. This teaches them to give back to the very community that is helping them.

Gifts for Pediatric Oncology Patients

Katie's House collects all year to provide gifts for the Pediatric Oncology Department at St. Joseph's Hospital in Paterson.

Adults with disabilities can make a difference in the lives of others! Just give us a chance!

Dear Friends of Katie’s House,

I have been collecting for the pediatric oncology department since our Katie finished her chemo in 1997.

As part of our effort to support children in need, KH will be collecting gifts for the children receiving treatment in the Pediatric Oncology Department at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Paterson, NJ. We are coordinating our efforts with local groups in Newton and the surrounding area.

Please consider either buying some toys/gifts or donation and mail to Katie’s House. Check payable to Katie's House and put in the memo Pediatric Oncology. Katie’s House is a non profit organization for adults with intellectual disabilities and we believe they too can Make A Difference if given a chance.

The following is a list of items:

Play Doh is always needed for the Pediatric Oncology Unit. The small 2 ounce cans are great. Once it is opened, it cannot be used again. (Preventing exposure to germs when children are having chemo.)

Crafts for all ages: Crayons, coloring books, glue sticks etc.

Toys and Games that you can play while confined to bed or while having a treatment.

Gift Cards for teens – Everyone forgets teens.

Nail Polish, Make-up, Bath & Body, Jewelry

Sports & Teen Magazines

Team Caps & T-Shirts

Anything that you can do will be greatly appreciated by these children and their families. Even when you have health insurance, parents still have out of pocket expenses and many hours of missing work. Thank you in advance for your help.

Please, no stuffed animals.

"Helping Honis"

Katie's House provided a one on one staff person to make it possible for Honis to attend summer camp for 2 years. The family put in a request for help since Honis was born with severe facial deformities and blind. He would not be able to attend the camp without Katie's House assistance.

"A Van For Shannen" with a Wheelchair Lift

Shannon, a young woman living in the Newton area with her parents, was born with neurological disabilities, spasticity on her left side and dystonia. Shannon was an active member in activities provided by Katie’s House, taking dance, sign and cooking classes and also an member of The Friendship Group.

Shannon’s Dad was battling Parkinsons, Mom lost her job, Hurricane Irene damaged their house and Shannon progressively became less mobile. She no longer could be transported in the family car and needed a van with a wheelchair lift or she would have been housebound.

Katie’s House, along with Shannon’s friends and family reached out to the community for help in raising money to take some of the burden off the family. $40,000 was raised to widen doorways in the house to allow a wheelchair to be used, a ramp was added outside the house for access and a wheelchair accessible van was purchased.
